How to fix a water damaged phone
Dropping your phone in water can be stressful, but acting quickly can significantly improve the chances of saving your device. Whether your phone fell into a sink, toilet, pool, or got soaked in the rain, taking the right steps immediately can help minimize damage.
Water damage is one of the most common smartphone issues we see at Cellular Toy Shoppe. While some devices can recover completely, others may suffer permanent damage if the wrong steps are taken.
What NOT to Do
There are many myths online about fixing water-damaged phones. Unfortunately, some of these suggestions can actually make the situation worse.
If your phone gets wet, avoid the following:
- Do not use a microwave. This can permanently destroy the device and may create a fire hazard.
- Do not use a hair dryer. Hot air can push moisture deeper into the phone and damage sensitive components.
- Do not place the phone in a freezer. Freezing does not remove moisture and can create additional condensation when the phone warms up.
- Do not charge the phone. Connecting a wet device to power can cause short circuits and permanent damage.
- Do not repeatedly press buttons. This may force water deeper into the phone.
- Do not attempt complicated repairs yourself. Opening modern smartphones without proper tools can cause additional damage.
What to Do Immediately
- Turn the phone off immediately. If it is already off, do not try to turn it on.
- Remove any accessories. Take off the case and disconnect any cables or accessories.
- Remove the SIM card tray. This allows moisture to escape and helps protect important components.
- Dry the exterior. Use a clean microfiber cloth to gently absorb visible moisture.
- Place the device in a dry environment. Silica gel packets are much more effective than rice for absorbing moisture.
Should You Put a Wet Phone in Rice?
While placing a phone in rice has become a popular home remedy, it is generally not recommended. Rice is not particularly effective at removing moisture from inside the device, and dust or small particles can become trapped in charging ports and speaker openings.
Silica gel packets are a much better option if they are available.
How Long Should You Wait?
If your phone has been exposed to water, allow it to dry for at least 24 to 48 hours before attempting to power it on. Even if the phone appears dry on the outside, moisture may still be trapped inside.
Why Professional Cleaning Matters
Water damage often causes corrosion that continues to spread long after the device has dried. Professional cleaning and inspection can help prevent long-term issues and improve the chances of a successful repair.
The sooner a water-damaged phone is inspected, the better the chances of recovering your device and data.
