What to do when iPhone screen goes black?

A black iPhone screen can be frustrating, especially when your phone was working perfectly moments before. While the issue may seem serious, there are several possible causes and some simple troubleshooting steps you can try before seeking professional repair.

1. Check the Battery

The most common and easiest-to-fix cause is a drained battery. Connect your iPhone to a charger and wait several minutes. If the battery was completely depleted, a charging icon should appear on the screen.

If your iPhone powers back on after charging, the problem was likely battery-related and no further action is required.

2. Force Restart Your iPhone

Sometimes an iPhone screen goes black due to a software crash or frozen operating system. Performing a force restart can often resolve the issue.

  • iPhone 11 and newer: Press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Press and hold the Volume Down button and Power button together until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 6s and earlier: Press and hold the Home button and Power button together until the Apple logo appears.

3. Look for Signs of Physical Damage

If the black screen appeared after dropping your iPhone, the display, internal screen connector, or other components may have been damaged. Even if the screen looks intact, internal connections can become loose or damaged from impact.

Water or moisture exposure can also cause the screen to go black and may require professional repair.

4. Rule Out Software Issues

If your iPhone restarts but continues experiencing display problems, a software issue may be the cause. In some cases, restoring the device through Recovery Mode or DFU Mode can resolve system-related problems.

Because these procedures can be complex and may result in data loss if performed incorrectly, many users prefer professional assistance.

When to Seek Professional Repair

If your iPhone remains unresponsive after charging and force restarting, the issue is likely hardware-related. Common causes include a failed screen, damaged display connector, battery problems, or logic board issues.
